The Literacy Challenge
Will your students be the next regional literacy champions?
The Literacy Challenge
The Literacy Challenge is a fun and engaging approach to promoting literacy skills that incorporates proven interdisciplinary approaches. Accept the challenge and engage your students in an empowering literacy experience!
Literacy Domain: Print awareness
Before you begin the Literacy Challenge, ensure your learners are print aware. In simple terms, students need to be aware that print is constant, that there is a connection between print and spoken language and that, in Englush, print is decoded from left to right.
Literacy Domain: Vocabulary building
When supporting reading instruction, it is important that learners have a reasonable grasp of the basic building blocks of literacy – words (vocabulary). The goal is simple - learn and use a new and interesting word every day.
Literacy Domain: Alphabet decoding
Start your Literacy Challenge by learning the 26 initial alphabet sounds. Learn how these sounds are used to build simple words and how they work together to make new sounds.
Literacy Domain: Reading decoding
When you can identify at least soem of the 26 alphabet sounds (s,a,t,p,i,n)you are ready to decode simple consonant – vowel – consonant (CVC) words. Earn reading decoding awards by practicing your readng daily and progressing to more advanced material.
Literacy Domain: Writing
Earn writing points and badges when you write the 26 initial alphabet sounds, code simple CVC words and progress to more complicated writing. Write sentences and paragraphs to achieve higher level awards. Your goal is to write freely and accurately.
